Fiesta Sale Notes

What to Check Before Buying a Used Ford Fiesta

Before arranging a viewing, ask for the registration details, mileage and available service records. Check the relevant vehicle history information in your country, including recorded inspections, outstanding finance and insurance write-off status where those checks are available. Any mismatch between the advert, documents and car needs a clear explanation.

Identify the exact engine and gearbox rather than treating all Fiestas alike. Some engines use a timing belt running in oil, making the correct oil specification and documented maintenance particularly important. Certain automatic versions use a dual-clutch transmission; check whether the specific car has had relevant repairs or outstanding recall work.

Inspect the car in daylight and, ideally, in dry conditions. Look for inconsistent panel gaps, differences in paint finish and signs of water entering the cabin or luggage area. Check tyre tread and wear patterns, then test the windows, air conditioning, central locking and dashboard controls.

On the test drive, pay attention to how the clutch takes up, how the gearbox shifts and whether the steering feels consistent. Listen for suspension knocks over uneven surfaces and check that the brakes work smoothly. Do not dismiss a warning light because the seller says it is only a sensor; establish the cause before agreeing to buy.

Compare the asking price with similar cars of the same age, engine, mileage and specification. Allow room in your budget for servicing, tyres and any work identified during an inspection. If records are incomplete or the seller will not allow reasonable checks, continuing your search may be the better decision.
